How do we complete the treatment?

We prescribe carbamide peroxide gel, which releases hydrogen peroxide more slowly to your teeth. We will take a mould of your teeth. This will hold the gel onto your teeth and provide a barrier to protect your gums. You can use this at home with the gel to gently whiten your teeth to the shade you are happy with.

Are there more natural ways to whiten my teeth?

Unfortunately, an effective natural alternative has not been found. Some claim to be, but they either have a high acid content (like lemon juice) which dissolves the enamel of your teeth or are abrasive and can wear the enamel away. This allows the yellow dentine below to show through more, leaving your teeth even less white and less protected from tooth decay.

Can I have a single treatment?

We used to do in-surgery whitening when we were allowed to prescribe a higher percentage of hydrogen peroxide. When this changed a few years ago it was our experience that the results were now much better and more predictable when the treatment was done gradually at home.

Will my teeth be damaged when I whiten them?

If you follow the instructions we give you, there will be no damage at all to the structure of your teeth. In fact, the peroxide has the added advantage of killing many of the bugs in your mouth which can lead to gum damage and decay. Your mouth, if anything, should be healthier after whitening treatment.

How white will my teeth get?

Most people get to a level of whiteness they are happy with. You can stop the treatment at whatever shade you are comfortable with. A small number of patients are looking for extreme white teeth. This may require ceramic veneers. We would usually start with whitening in this case, so you can know for sure.

Will it hurt?

It is normal to experience some sensitivity when whitening your teeth. You may benefit from using a sensitive toothpaste and avoiding ice in your drinks.
